Big budget film reboots are a tricky business. Fans have expectations and, let’s be honest, we’re not always the most accepting when some Hollywood hotshot changes our precious characters. In 2009, JJ Abrams did just that with “Star Trek,” but he was praised for it. With the sequel, “Star Trek Into Darkness” right around the…
I have always been a bit overly obsessed with the summer blockbuster season. Every year, there are multiple films that push epic trailers that make me think they will be the best film of all time. This doesn’t usually happen, but these movies are huge, with the most well known actors and the most popular…
There have been many occasions when I’ve felt like disowning my friends when I realize they haven’t seen The Dark Knight trilogy. Some movies just have to be seen. For many other geeks, some novels just have to be read. How have you felt when your buddy told you he or she didn’t know what…
Game of Thrones appropriately holds the reputation of killing off main characters. Since season one saw a very important player relieved of his head, I guess that makes sense. Well we got a taste of that with season three’s fourth episode, an chapter that seems like nothing happened until you really consider all the stuff…
“It’s a terrible day in California,” Jason joked about the 79 degree weather. It isn’t often you find a geek with social skills; but a geek with social skills and musical talent is even more surprising. That doesn’t begin to scratch the surface for Jason Achilles Mezilis, guitarist of the emerging band Owl. The group,…
I do not like how quickly this season of Game of Thrones is flying by. Episode three saw some significant moments, but it also confirmed one of my fears. With so many storylines and characters being covered, I don’t think we’re going to see a whole lot from some of our Westeros favorites. This week…
There are very few things I enjoy in this world more than epic movie trailers. The anticipation, the consolidation of exciting moments, the creative editing, they’re just fun. I counted down the days for the first trailer to “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” and I still occasionally watch the preview for “X-Men: The Last…
A lot of film people complain about the number of comic book movies that are released every year. Of course that’s not a problem for us at Geek Insider. But in terms of blockbuster source material, people often overlook the constant presence of another genre, young adult fantasy. Maybe the general public doesn’t know where…
The MTV Movie Awards are something else. Sure the awards probably mean something to some of the actors who win them. But seeing that the nominees are selected by MTV executives and the winners are chosen by whoever votes on the MTV website, to win means an odd pairing of stodgy suits and “Twilight” loving…
Some Spoilers Ahead Fans of the G. I. Joe franchise have been anxiously waiting for the second installment since the 2009 release of G. I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. So the question here is whether G. I. Joe: Retaliation lived up to high expectations? This is pretty much a debatable topic since everyone has mixed feelings about the…
In 2011, Hugh Jackman starred in a film based on Rock-em Sock-em Robots. That sounds like a terrible concept, but the movie, “Real Steel” was actually really good. Jackman played a robo jockey that controlled a large robot that boxes other robots for sport. With an underdog bot, it’s essentially “Rocky” with robots. So when…
If you want to see the massive scope of HBO’s hit series “Game of Thrones” look no further than what amounted to a two week season premiere. In 120 commercial free minutes, longer than many feature length films, we now have a sense of the season’s storylines and where our characters are going. There’s no…
Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any actor in Hollywood who garners such a mixed response from both critics and movie fans as Tom Cruise. Virtually all of his films that have been released in the past decade are met with articles questioning the star’s box office pull. Sure, some of…
The year was 2009. A very popular late night comedian was given the premiere comedic job in television. His appeal toward younger viewers was going to be a welcome update to “The Tonight Show.” The world would then go on spinning with Johnny Carson’s old chair filled by the rightful heir to the throne, Conan…
In today’s movie review of The Host (2013), the focus is on adolescent love “squares” rather than on alien invasion issues. “In a world where everything has been dubbed as perfect, aliens who were called “The Souls” try to invade the last of the remaining humans who were resisting their forces.” – This was the description…
