Samsung Galaxy S4 will Feature Eye-tracking Technology

We all know that Samsung is set to release the next iteration of the Galaxy S series smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S4 on 14th March in New York City. However, we still have no solid information regarding the specs of the phone; but we are certain that it will blow everything that’s available in the market away. Today, we have got something more interesting to add to the Samsung Galaxy S4 rumors, this one has to be the best rumor so far. According to recent reports, the Galaxy S4 will feature a new eye-tracking technology.

Samsung Galaxy S4: Scroll with your Eyes

According to the reports from New York Times, the next flagship Samsung Galaxy phone will feature a software that is capable of tracking  and understanding your eye movement. This new technology will be integrated mainly with reading related tasks like when you finish a page of an ebook or some other text; the phone will automatically turn to the next page. This will make reading blogs more fun as the phone will keep scrolling for you without you having to lift a finger.

Although, the report didn’t shed much light on any details regarding the technology or describe any tech behind this incredible eye-tracking feature; we do however, think it’s nothing too fancy. Perhaps just an eye-recognition software that uses the phone’s front camera to track the movement of the eye. Samsung also filed for “Samsung eye scroll” trademark in U.S. and Europe. The filings for the trademark describe the eye-tracking feature as:

Computer application software having a feature of sensing eye movements and scrolling displays of mobile devices, namely, mobile phones, smartphones and tablet computers according to eye movements; digital cameras; mobile telephones; smartphones; tablet computers.

The source also described that the Samsung Galaxy S4’s software capabilities are exceeding the importance of it’s hardware components. However, in response to this assessment, Samsung Chief Product officer, Kevin Packingham said that the Samsung Galaxy S4 is an “Amazing phone” – We have heard terms like “Magical” and “Revolutionary” tossed around during times like these before, so that’s really not surprising at all.

Samsung Galaxy: Innovation or Gimmick?

Even though Samsung is now one of the leading mobile manufacturers in the world, most people [Read: iDorks] still see it as an Apple copycat. So, technologies like these will help Samsung make a name for itself as an innovator in the mobile tech market. We don’t know if eye-scrolling will be one of the breakthroughs in the future tech, but it sure is cool and we haven’t seen anything like this before. Even though scrolling on a touchscreen isn’t hard work, scrolling with your eyes is just what we need to make our lives more simple. This feature could also prove to be helpful when capturing customers’ interest.

In other news, the Korean tech giant has also launched a teaser for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4. It doesn’t reveal anything about the phone, but you can see the cute kid portraying Samsung’s secret messenger. Stay tuned for the Samsung Unpacked event on 14th March, our very own Assistant Editor, Faith O’Neil will be attending the event in New York, which means we will be bringing you all the latest updates from the event.
