Are Ultrabooks and Video Games Compatible?

Ultrabooks are compatible with games, but never forget that they are still laptops. It is a trademark of Intel. These are supposed to be powerful laptops. However, gamers are not entirely happy. 

Many brands carry the trademark, like Dell, HP, Lenovo, LG, and so much more. On average, one would spend $1,800 to get an Ultrabook. The thing is that you get measly hardware like 13 inches of screen, 2.4 GHz for a processor, a Core i5 at that, and a RAM of only 16GB. 

At this price, you could have built an excellent gaming desktop. As far as games are concerned, you can use an Ultrabook, but do not expect too much. At best, some Ultrabooks come with an NVIDIA ‎GTX1650 video card.

Do Ultrabooks Work with AAA Games?

Many gamers put several brands of Ultrabooks to the test. They used AAA game titles like Prey and Witcher 3. All these games are hogs for power and video memory. Some of them were specifically designed for a gaming console like the Xbox or PlayStation.

• Batman: Arkham Knight of 2015 – the game did not even launch;
• Battlefield 1 of 2016 – the game crashed even before completing the load time;
• Deus Ex: Mankind Divided of 2016 – the game worked at the lowest video setting of 720p, and the best frame rate is 20 FPS;
• Fallout 4 of 2015 – like the previous one, it worked at 720p, but this managed a frame rate of 24 FPS;
• Mass Effect Andromeda of 2017 – the game crashed on the loading screen;
• Prey of 2017 – the game launched at 720p but only worked with 18 FPS;
• Watch Dogs 2 of 2016 – worked at 720p but only at 6 FPS;
• The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt of 2015 – also worked at 720p and at 6 FPS. 

The games that launched had horrible input lag, especially Witcher 3. Gamers do not like this, so perhaps people can say goodbye to Ultrabooks as far as Triple-A games are concerned. 

Not surprisingly, Ultrabooks do not meet the specifications of these games. They were never designed to run Triple-A games. While some games launched, the experience was just terrible. You cannot play them with decent quality. Although some games launched, the input lag was so bad that they were unplayable. Imagine clicking on a mouse, and it takes two seconds for the game to react. 

Do Ultrabooks Work with Old Games?

So, to answer this question, people must find out if Ultrabooks can render old games. Below are some results.

• Alan Wake of 2012 – the game did not launch;
• Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag of 2013 – works at 720p and up to 30 FPS;
• Borderlands 2 of 2012 – works at 720p and at 50 FPS;
• Dead Island of 2011 – works at 720p  and at 60+ FPS;
• The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion of 2006 – you can render this at 1080p up to 60 FPS;
• The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim of 2011 – you can also play it at 1080p and up to 45 FPS.

These games are old, and yet one did not launch. You need to understand here that Ultrabooks, regardless of their power, are not dependable when it comes to gaming.

Sure, they pack more memory, better graphics units and bigger storage devices. However, a gaming laptop is more than the sum of its parts. No, it is not worth the money if you are a gamer. It does not make sense to spend $2,000 for a rig that does not launch games. For the same amount of money, you can set up a gaming desktop that you can rely on. You can even use the same desktop to edit videos, another activity that hogs computer resources. 

Even if Ultrabooks can launch games, you will not get the best experience out of it. Once you are done with a game, you surely want to move on to another one. However, this is not possible. Every time a gaming company releases a sequel, there is a big chance that the new game has higher computer specification requirements. As such, it is likely that your Ultrabook does not meet these requirements. 

For $2,000, you can build a 4K gaming desktop rig. You can also choose the parts at this price instead of relying on pre-built models. While there are build-your-own-laptop marketing offers out there, the amount of money you have to spend is significantly higher than building your own desktop. 

As a gamer, you need to get the most value for your money. You also likely want to release YouTube videos for your games. An Ultrabook with 16 GB of memory will not suffice to edit videos with heavy graphics. You need at least 32 GB, which you can easily get or upgrade if you have a desktop.
