What Is Up with the Hype on WHOOP?

Juggling between work and house chores, we often forget the value of a good night’s sleep. As a result, we can find ourselves struggling with stress, anxiety, and restlessness, all of which significantly impact our health. Having a good night’s sleep boosts your immunity, improves productivity, and has an overall influence on your wellbeing. 

Now, there are a wide variety of startups that are stepping in to solve that problem. Sure, some of them, like Purple, Casper, Leesa, Eight Sleep, and others, have provided different forms of mattresses. These mattresses are supposed to help you sleep better. But, you are also supposed to have a better time accessing and finding out if the mattress is right for you.

Of course, we also know about the sleep number bed.

But then there is a a different category of sleep startups. These sleep startups want you to know more about your sleep data and your health.

WHOOP is one of these startups.

What is WHOOP?

Well, right off the bat, WHOOP is a startup that recently raised a significant portion of funds to take it from one step of the way to the next level. It has raised a total of $204 billion so far and should be poised to IPO soon.

The firm has athletes that range from Patrick Mahomes to Justin Thomas and even Kate Courtney, a wide variety of athletes across various verticals of sports.

It is reported to have around $100 million in annual revenues.  If that is the case, then it might be worth the hype.

But besides its significant raise and athlete endorsements, what does it do?

It offers daily personalized fitness, sleep, and recovery information presented to you. It only asks for $30/month.

WHOOP Helps You Understand More About You

To help you with it, WHOOP is an app that tracks your sleeping hours. In addition, the app has a sleep coach that tells you how much sleep you need based on the type of day you have. 

Additionally, the sleeping goals are tailored according to your needs. For instance, if you have a busy day ahead, you will need to get 100% of your sleep. For days when you have to be slightly active, you will need 85% of your sleep. It also has a setting for days when you are too lazy to do anything. The goal will be 70% of your sleep. The sleep coach alters sleeping hours just as the day you will have ahead. 

In the app, not only the sleeping hours are calculated, but several other features are monitored as well. The hours of deep sleep or when you experience disturbance and pretty much everything that happens during sleep, the app monitors it through the night. 

The most appealing feature is the app even tells you about the time you woke up in the middle of the night. Not only this, the app monitors your heartbeat per minute. 

Since everyone is different, there isn’t a benchmark on how much sleep you should get. It varies from person to person and depends upon several factors. However, based on four categories, the app determines how much sleep you sleep at night.

  • Baseline sleep- The app tracks how much sleep you must get based on your average sleeping hours. 
  • Recent strain- If you are active throughout the day, WHOOP monitors it and sends alerts so you have to stay in bed more. 
  • Sleep debt- When you aren’t getting sufficient sleep, the app calculates it and tells you how much you should be getting. 
  • Recent naps- The app even tracks unexpected naps you take during the day.
