Marvel have recently announced they will be killing off a major player in the Marvel Universe, everyone’s favourite Canadian, James Howlett aka Logan, aka The Wolverine.
With the impending doom of Wolverine, we at Geek Insider decided to share a tribute to Wolverine, our 5 favourite Wolverine deaths… Or, things that should have killed him… he does regenerative powers after all..
5) Skeleton Ripped Out
As part of the Fatal Attraction storyline in 1993, X-Men issue #25 saw Wolverine nearly gut Magneto in a fight. However Magneto does not take too kindly to people trying to rearrange his internal organs and literally ripped the Adamantium out of Wolverine.
The result left Wolverine with no Adamantium claws and led to his retirement from the X-Men. Until seven years later when Apocalypse decided to rebound the metal back to his skeleton in 2000.
4) Burnt to a Crisp
In the event leading up to Marvel’s Civil War, a reality TV show gone wrong forced the villain Nitro to use his explosive powers to level several city blocks, an elementary school, all of the New Warriors and 600 civilians including 60 children. This made him Wolverine’s next target and as soon as search and rescue efforts stopped.
This resulted in Wolverine, accompanied by multipleS.H.I.E.L.D Agents, finding Nitro in a log cabin the middle of nowhere where he once again used his powers to incinerate all the Agents and reducing Wolverine to nothing but an Adamantium skeleton… Ouch.
3) Ripped in Half
Back in December 2005, Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof wrote Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk. The story was pretty simple, Nick Fury hires Wolverine to assassinate the Hulk because he’s the best at what he does, and what he does isn’t nice.
The series started with Wolverine looking for his lower body after being ripped in half by the Hulk in a fight, using his keen sense of smell he locates it on top of a mountain. However due to delays in the comic series it took Wolverine 4 years to find his other half and for issue 3 of the comic series to be released.
2) Broken Heart
They say there’s no cure for a broken heart, and we can only assume the same goes for those with mutant powers that allow them to heal from wounds.
In that case it’s a wonder Wolverine can still get out of bed in the morning, the guys had more heartbreak than he has had complaints about his movie series!
From Mariko Yashida, whom Logan was previously engaged to before she was poisoned and euthanized by Wolverine’s claws, to Jean Grey who is forever switching between loving Wolverine, loving Cyclops and becoming the host to the cosmic Phoenix Force. It’s no secret Logan’s heart has been smashed to pieces.
1) Murdered
In a spin-off series Deadpool Kill the Marvel Universe, a crazed Deadpool rampages killing every superpowered being he can lay his eyes on.
During this rampage Wade Wilson discovers Wolverine’s true power, the reason he never dies and it’s not claws, it’s not regeneration and it’s certainly not overusing the word bub. It’s Popularity and the Merc with a Mouth exposes this to once and for all finish off Wolverine with a carbonadium blade for good measure.
Whilst death in the comic universe is rarely permanent for superheroes, Wolverine’s death should be viewed as a dramatic pause. It will be very interesting to see how the writers will pull off the mutants death and what impact it will have on all the characters throughout the Marvel Universe that have personally affected by our hero, Wolverine. R.I.P, Bub.
