‘Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’ Easter Eggs

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is being hailed as one of the best video games of 2015, and for good reason. On top of the 50+ hours of solid gameplay, the game’s mammoth open-world offers players a seemingly endless number of things to explore. As per usual, series creator Hideo Kojima has littered the game with hidden secrets and eccentric references only detectable by the detail-oriented fans of the series.

Here are some Metal Gear Solid V Easter Eggs you might have missed the first time around.

Celebrate Your Birthday!

Wonder why the game asks for your birthdate when you begin a new campaign of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain? So you can celebrate your birthday when the time comes! When you return to Mother Base on your selected birthdate, you’re rewarded with a birthday cut scene full of fireworks, cigars, cake, and tone deaf soldiers singing you a song. If you also happen to have a 100-percent bond with Quiet, you’ll get this extra birthday surprise.

KO an Enemy With an Empty Magazine

This is a comical Easter Egg that requires good aim. When you approach an enemy soldier wearing a helmet, throw an empty bullet magazine at him. If you hit your target, you’ll knock him out and hear a “ding.” It may take you a few tries to nail it, but the trials are worth the reward!

Play the Game as a Woman

If you ever get sick of Kiefer Sutherland’s husky voice acting as Snake, you can opt to complete the game with a female protagonist. In order to do this, you’ll need to finish the Side Ops mission Prisoner Extraction 02 and rescue a female captive. You can then select her as your character, resulting in a fully playable female Snake.

Personal Shower With Quiet

If you neglect your hygiene long enough in Metal Gear Solid V, you will trigger a cut scene upon your return to Mother Base. This usually ends with Ocelot dumping a bucket of water on you. If you and Quiet are returning to the base together with a bond level of at least 60 on the other hand, your cut scene gets an upgrade. Rather than a bucket of water, Quiet will reward you with a personal shower scene.

Military Grade Horse Poop

As you bond with your companion D-Horse, you’ll eventually unlock his ability to defecate on command. But did you know his poops are as practical as they are hilarious? These tactical turds can cause light armored vehicles to lose control and crash. It’s the perfect low-tech alternative to C4 for roadside assaults.

References to P.T. (Silent Hills)

Although Silent Hills never came to fruition, fans of P.T. (another brainchild of Hideo Kojima) are treated to several Easter Eggs in Metal Gear Solid V referencing the popular horror demo. The first appears as a radio broadcast in a tent en route to The Devils House in Africa (Mission 20: Voices). It’s the same terrifying news report you hear in P.T.
Other homages to P.T. include cassette tape 204863 (which contains music from P.T.) and the sound of the swinging chandelier in Shago Village.

Bathroom Soldier

This nasty Easter Egg is not for the squeamish. First, enter a restroom with an occupied stall. Using your binoculars, spy on the soldier from an adjacent stall to unlock this disgusting sound bite. Once you have it recorded, you can use it to deter enemy soldiers. If you’ve been spotted, duck into an unoccupied toilet. Playing the recording through the speaker will prevent the guards from opening the door.
