It remains essential to download the YouTube app if you’re a Roku owner. Roku users would now be out of YouTube access if it were not for the just announced binding agreement between Roku and Google to maintain one of the most popular streaming apps in the world.
Why Google Threatened to Remove YouTube from Roku
It all started when Google demanded preferential treatment and more data on Roku devices. Unhappy with the demand, Roku removed the YouTube TV app from its channel store, leaving it only available for those who had already downloaded it. As a final blow, Google imposed December 9, 2021, as a deadline for Roku users to stream through the YouTube app unless the two companies reached a new distribution agreement. Of course, we expected that the two would agree, which they did a day before the imposed deadline. Now the dust seems to settle, but you better download the YouTube app to access YouTube TV and get out of the confusion.
