Fans of The Incredibles will be happy to hear that Disney is making another superhero movie. Big Hero 6, loosely based on the comic of the same name,is Disney’s first animated movie to feature Marvel characters since the company bought Marvel Entertainment in 2009. The film will open in theaters on November 7.
What It’s All About
The film takes place in the fictional city of San Fransokyo, and tells the story of robotics prodigy Hiro Hamanda as he uncovers a criminal plot with the help of his self-created robot Baymax. The two pull together a group of reluctant superheroes in an attempt to stop the villains and save their city.
The Big Hero 6 comic book series is not as well-known as the popular X-Men and Avengers stories, but after the release of the film this quirky group of heroes may give the other superhero teams a run for their money. Director Don Hall confirmed early on that Big Hero 6 will be set in a stand-alone universe rather than connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so don’t expect to see any cameos from Iron Man, Captain America, or the Avengers.
Why the First Full Trailer Looks Awesome
We’ve already seen glimpses of how cute this movie will be in the teaser trailer released last month, and the new official trailer holds nothing back on the adorable scale. Both trailers focus heavily on Baymax, the huggable robot who looks like a cousin of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, but the new trailer also gives us a first look at which superheroes we can expect to see in the movie. So far we know that Wasabi-No-Ginger, Honey Lemon, GoGo Tomago, and Fred will all be appearing as members of the team. Disney has released new character images for all of these superheroes, so go check them out here if you want to know more.
If the trailer is anything to go by, Big Hero 6 looks like it will be full of Disney’s usual humor and charm. The style is very Pixar-esque, and the relationship between Hiro and Baymax has already won our hearts. What will make the movie truly special, however, is the combination of this fun Disney style with the epic action of Marvel’s superheroes as they fight against evil.
Hidden Frozen Easter Egg
The trailer includes a little something extra for those with good attention to detail. Fans with keen eyesight were quick to point out the cameo appearance of Hans from Disney’s latest hit Frozen in a “wanted” poster to the right of the police officer’s head. While San Fransokyo may not be connected to the greater Marvel universe, Disney is clearly maintaining their tradition of sewing hints that all of their latest films may in fact take place in the same world.
After Frozen’s success at the Academy Awards, Big Hero 6 has some pretty big shoes to fill. We’ll have to wait until November to see if it lives up to the task, but judging by the trailer, Disney’s new film is ready for the challenge.
