Geeky Nail Designs: The Weird, the Cute, and the Impractical
Gather around, geeks, it’s time to look at some of the cutest, weirdest, and the most impractical geeky nail designs out there. Artists have gone above and beyond to really take advantage of their little nail-y canvases to create some of the most fantastic little art pieces ever. There’s tons of amazing geeky nail designs out there! However, be warned that one downside I found is that most sites and blogs do not include step-by-step tutorials to help the reader out. Most will only have a list of nail polishes that were used in the creation of the design.
The Cute
This category is easy enough since many of the video game characters and icons out there are pretty cute on their own. The designs range from simple and cute to mind blowing-ly adorable.
For a simple Pokemon design, just look at Pikachu:
Obviously, you’ll need longer nails for this design.
And with every Pokemon, comes the customary Pokeball. A benefit to this design is that shorter nails would work just as well as longer nails.
The artist, The Nailasaurus, actually has a lot of great designs on her blog, which you can find here. She also works on what she calls a “modest” budget, so you don’t usually need to drop a lot of cash to copy her designs. On top of that, her website has a lot of tutorials on other subjects besides geeky nail designs like “How To Start a Nail Blog” (which, up until now, I didn’t know was a thing) or “How To Turn Nail Art Into Wall Art.” Unfortunately, she doesn’t include step-by-step instructions for all of her nail designs.
Of course, one of the most popular types of geeky nail designs out there is the Mario series.
The details for the design above can be found on this blog, called Oh Me! Oh My!
There are simpler designs than this, as well. If you want to start with something easier, there’s always the Mario Mushroom design:
Kelsie’s Nail Files is another blog that has a lot of great styles and patterns. However, most of them are not geek orientated.
Saving the best for last, here is my favourite Mario nail design:
Simple but also really, really cute!
Of course, if you think you have the skill (and patience) then you can always try out this anime nail design:
For the Sailor Moon fans out there, the same artist did a simplistic design that you might like:
For the comic book/movie fans out there, The Nailasaurus blog also did an awesome super hero nail set with Iron Man, Wolverine, Captain America, The Hulk, and Spiderman. This is also a good design for the people out there with shorter nails.
Any “Adventure Time” fans out there? This one’s for you!
The blog, Chalkboard Nails, is another really awesome site. It has a lot of designs ranging from pop culture to galaxies to animal print. Another geeky nail design that I found on that blog was this “Legend of Korra” design:
And this “The Last Airbender” design:
Sexy Geeky Nail Designs
Okay, enough with the cute. Let’s look at the sexy:
No surprise, The Nailasaurus had one of the best “Harry Potter” nail designs. It’s simple but sexy. Another, more complicated, design on the same lines is from the artist, Downlo:
If you’re looking for something more artsy, check out these nails from the Finger Painted Blog:
Or if you’re feeling like you really want a challenge, you can try attempting this “Street Fighter” geeky nail design:
Honestly, that level of effort and perfection leads me to believe that particular nail artist sold their soul to the geeky devil to be able to do it. It’s just amazing.
I know, I know, back to The Nailasaurus. It’s not my fault she does such easy and amazing designs. This one even contains a step-by-step tutorial on the design (click on the link in the photo caption). This particular artist also did a really attractive “Lord of the Rings” nail design as well. It seems like it would be simple, except you’ll have to manage to write Elvish on your nail neatly enough to look good:
The next one by Chalkboard Nails pays homage to the “Lord of the Rings”‘s great villain, Sauron:
The Ridiculous
Okay, now for the truly fun part! These next designs are ridiculous, impractical, and hilarious. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not putting any of these designs down. Most of them are pieces of art, I just don’t get how anyone would be able to get through a day without having their nails ripped off or accidently stabbing themselves in the eye. And with that introduction, I introduce you to the “Doctor Who” TARDIS design:
This one is the least impractical geeky nail design in this article since only the thumb nail is altered in any way. The blog doesn’t include a tutorial so I can only assume that one must add a tailored trim fake nail onto their thumb before painting…
This particular artist, Kayleigh, has a lot of crazy geeky nail designs on her Deviant Art account, like the Eye Of Sauron design above. My favourite is definitely this ridiculous, amazing, and wholly impractical “Adventure Time” Rainicorn design:
Or you could embrace your darker (and sharper!) side with this Batman design:
Geek Insider is not responsible if you manage to gouge your own eyes out with that design! Love “The Little Mermaid”?
Get some Ursula tentacles!
I honestly can’t imagine trying to get through a normal day with that mermaid tail stuck to my nail…
Let’s go retro with these “Tetris” nails:
Or how about this cute little design based on “Up”?
And finally, to top it off, a Quidditch themed geeky nail design:
Obviously, all these crazy nail designs were done by the same artists: Kayleigh O’Connor. She’s an artist from the UK who fell in love with doing ridiculous designs on the false nails she began wearing when she was young. She’s done everything from TV shows to movies to comics. All her stuff is pretty amazing but she doesn’t include tutorials with her pictures so recreating these pieces of nail art might be a bit of a challenge to a beginner.
