What Elin Doughouz’s Career Can Teach Us About Multi-Industry Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurs who choose to dedicate their entire careers to one industry usually have a few good reasons for specializing instead of diversifying. Some may say there is only one industry or business idea they are truly passionate about. Others may cite the amount of time and effort it takes to be an expert in more than one field. However, entrepreneurs like Elin Doughouz show that multi-industry entrepreneurship is not just an unattainable ideal; it is a reality for modern entrepreneurs who are able to channel multiple passions and interests into success.
Doughouz, a global entrepreneur who comes from a multicultural family background, found his first passion at a young age, developing a strong interest in computers and technology. At the age of 13, he began learning the ins and outs of cybersecurity, computer networks, and even hacking techniques, building a knowledge base about computers and their vulnerabilities. By the age of 15, he was learning programming and software development, programming his own apps for iOS and Android. He eventually began selling his own apps for Windows and mobile platforms as a professional mobile and desktop application developer from 2013 to 214.
In 2015, all of this experience culminated in the first business he founded, ScriptSun. Through ScriptSun, he sold digital platforms for functions such as social networking, video and music streaming, and dating applications. The company’s products were sold through digital marketplaces such as Codecanyon and allowed clients to establish infrastructure to run their applications. Through the needs of Scriptsun’s large international customer base, Doughouz recognized the necessity of high-quality hosting providers that could offer both performance and technical support for the complex scripts the company was selling to its clients.
Doughouz quickly moved to fill this need by founding UltaHost in 2018. UltaHost’s stated goal was to build a hosting platform that was specifically designed to support developers and businesses using web applications, social platforms, and online communities. As a result, UltaHost was optimized for modern web applications, providing solutions such as VPS hosting, dedicated servers, and managed hosting services capable of supporting projects like e-commerce platforms, social networks, blogs, and media websites. The company went on to establish headquarters in the United States and was incorporated as an independent U.S. company in 2021.
The events that led to the founding of UltaHost illustrate an important lesson for aspiring multi-industry entrepreneurs: if your existing customer base is faced with an important need, don’t wait for another company to fill that void; see if you can be the solution to your customer’s problems. This approach takes advantage of the relationship your company has with its customers and makes it easier to develop an infrastructure that can serve both existing needs and new ones.
“One thing that may not be obvious about this journey is that most of the growth didn’t come from a single big moment or a large investment. It came from constantly solving practical problems for users and developers,” Doughouz commented. “Before founding UltaHost, I had already spent years building software platforms through ScriptSun, and those experiences helped me understand what developers and entrepreneurs actually need to run their businesses online.”
Doughouz’s work in the tech space makes his next endeavor somewhat surprising, as in 2023, he decided to enter the field of defense and security equipment by founding the Istanbul-based defense industry company Wolvor Global. As a company providing military equipment, tactical gear, security clothing, and related technologies for the defense and security sectors, Wolvor Global seems like a large leap from Doughouz’s previous ventures. Despite this, Doughouz oversees manufacturing processes at Wolvor while still leading his infrastructure and hosting businesses.
The other lesson that can be gleaned from Doughouz’s experience is that certain skills can travel across industries. By building two companies in the tech industry, Doughouz honed his skills in leadership, infrastructure-building, and business optimization. Although the defense industry seems like an entirely different world from the tech industry, organizational skills are essential to success in any industry. For a seasoned entrepreneur, these skills are second-nature, making it easier to turn multiple industries or interests into profitable businesses.
As Doughouz says, “There’s no shortage of remarkable ideas; what’s missing is the will to execute them.”
