Metaverse is taking shape rapidly, and you better be prepared.
You must have heard the term “Metaverse” before, and it’s recurring a lot lately. Although developers are yet to call it a wrap, we already have close examples of metaverse such as Decentraland, Roblox, Fortnite, and Second Life virtual worlds.
Recently, Facebook changed its official name to Meta as part of its plan to transform the entire platform into a 3D virtual world. This will only happen after 5G networks, and appropriate devices become widely available.
The metaverse will be deployed in a few years to come, drastically changing the world. Read on to find out how.
What Is the Metaverse?
Metaverse is a virtual world that you can only access through virtual reality headsets. Recent mobile devices and computers can also offer access to the metaverse but in 2D. The virtual world presents your social media experience with a logic upgrade. It will incorporate all social media aspects in a 3D world where you appear as an avatar.
For example, if you’re in New York and your friend is in Chicago, both of you can sit in a bar in your location and have drinks via the metaverse. Everything will appear as if you were physically together, and you can spot other virtual people relaxing in the same bar playing soft music. Although you will be sitting in different apartments miles away, you will be meeting in New York in avatar form.
Of course, you won’t spot avatars in New York as these will be online representations on the bar. However, it will appear and feel like you’re in New York.
There’s also a possibility that soon, both you and your friends will beam into an actual bar in Chicago in hologram form. Soon avatars will be holograms and since holograms exist in the real world, be ready to meet them walking in the streets and sitting at a table next to you.
Michael Jackson’s hologram performed at the Billboard Music Award 2014, supported by real dancers. This means that your hologram and that of your friend can attend a live concert or meet for a drink. That tech is with us now, and we only need to integrate it into our lives.
How Will Metaverse Change Work?
Metaverse will affect not only dating but also the workplace. Here’s how
- Meetings and Conferencing
The virtual representation associated with metaverse will help businesses save expenses related to meetings and conferences. Business executives will no longer need to make long journeys worldwide for deals. Instead, they will simply beam in a virtual room and meet business partners.
While this may take a while, Microsoft has developed a platform where you can collaborate with another person in a virtual room as if physically present. You gather as holograms 3D avatars animated in a virtual world by following movements and face with the webcam. Colleagues can maintain eye contact and study features on a joint project as if they were together in a lab, office, library, etc.
Such a virtual convenience would come in handy in future pandemics as no one will need to worry about close contact.
- New Jobs
Although technology and digitization seem to replace humans in workplaces, the metaverse will create new ones. Suddenly, we’ll have virtual options for jobs that previously required in-person interaction , meaning that remote work opportunities will increase.
For example, virtual customers will receive assistance from a virtual attendant working remotely. The same technology will give management more power to supervise employees. They will access everything workers do, meaning privacy invasion will likely be an issue.
- Military Training
The US Army is already training on metaverse served by Microsoft. The training headsets let soldiers see their surroundings through a compass onto their mission field, access three-dimensional terrain maps, and project holographic images.
This way, soldiers can see the environment from the enemy’s view and find the best escape route. Besides, they can quickly locate other platoon members, see-through rain, smoke, and around corners.
- Medical Surgeries
Once metaverse lands in hospitals, health specialists will not have to move to perform surgeries on distant patients. Soon, a heart specialist in New York will perform open-heart surgery on a patient in Washington using precision robots. However, both locations must have a reliable 5G network. Besides, the Washington facility must have precision robots that the New York-based doctor will control using a virtual reality device.
Through metaverse, manufacturers will solve problems and develop designs in real-time. Already Boeing has announced plans to build a plane there.
Organizations will use the metaverse for their prototype systems without testing actual hardware. Robots and sensors will help test software in the virtual world and simulate real integrations before implementing them.
Metaverse will also enable customer integration in production from the word go, helping companies develop safe and healthy products.
The virtual world will let you to walk around a shopping mall, make purchases and receive products from the comfort of your couch. Once a robot in an automated warehouse identifies the items, it will locate the replica in a store and ship the package.
- Cryptocurrency Salaries
Most norms and traditional rules, such as fiat currencies, will not apply in the metaverse. You can only buy and sell virtual items using cryptocurrencies and not euros or dollars.
Governments have little role in the metaverse, and the trend seems irreversible. For that reason, it will make sense for employees to get paid in cryptocurrencies in the future.
The metaverse will be good for society if well regulated.
