5 SciFi Films Everyone Should Watch

Because life is too short to watch crappy movies.

Inception

Inception is a mind-blowing story and to boot, the SciFi film is blessed with a dream-worthy cast. The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, Sir Michael Caine, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, Ken Watanabe and Pete Postlethwaite. Now you see why this is such a wordy list? It’s too good not to share. Inception tells the tale of Dom, a professional thief who steals information while experiencing shared dreaming. He is then offered a job to perform “inception”, the implantation of another person’s ideas in a target’s subconcious. The entire movie is visually stunning and forces you to pay attention. Here’s a fun fact: the first letter of each of the main character’s first names spell DREAMS.

Back to the Future

The first film is incredible. The second film is boderline average. The third film is good but not great. If you’re new to the Back to the Future trilogy, it’s basically about a young teen who time travels in a Delorean turned time-machine. Like many science fiction comedy films, Back to the Future enchants you from the beginning. The well-chosen cast brings the story to life and they are nearly perfect in every way. Plus, the film has a stunning soundtrack!

Star Wars

What pops up in your mind when it comes to SciFi films? You can see it now, can you? So, of course I’m including Star Wars in this list — this is clearly a no brainer. Stars Wars (specifically A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Seriously, you can just skip the rest) is created by George Lucas and the overall box office revenue has generated over $4 billion. The latest installment is scheduled to be released in 2015 and it even looks like heavyweights Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher will reprise their roles in Episode VII. With J.J. Abrams as the director, it’s no wonder that everyone has high expectations of the film. Let’s hope it won’t disappoint us!

Alien

“That Sigourney Weaver is a sweet girl but she really shouldn’t go without makeup,” so says Sophia Petrillo. Did the aliens scare you? Or were you appalled by Sigourney Weaver bare face? New to Alien? Well, then you should head down to the nearest DVD store and buy a copy! Directed by Ridley Scott, the science fiction horror film has gotten successful that it has led to a media franchise of video games and comic books. Alien is movie magic and makes your blood run cold.

Gravity

Gravity was one of the big winners in the 86th annual Academy Awards. Director Alfonso Cuarón took home the Academy Award for Best Director, beating out top contenders such as Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) and Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street). Among Garvity’s awards include Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Film Editing and Best Visual Effects. Gravity, however, is not for everyone — a few has proclaimed the film as boring and over rated. Still, I’m including the movie in this list as it blew me (I’m sure it did to you, too) away. Watching it made me grateful that we human beings have both our feet on the ground.
