5 Nerd-Inspired Hairstyles for Women

Lots of geek-loving girls enjoy getting dressed up and trying out different hairstyles. Whether you’re channeling your inner fangirl, or just looking for something you can try on the daily, we’ve compiled a handful of our favorite nerd-inspired hair looks. A few are based on characters, while others are just simple and cute. One thing’s for sure, though, they’re all worthy of being added to your rotation.

1. Beautiful Bows

This first hairstyle is perfect for when you’re pressed for time, or just need something simple to round out your look. We recommend straightening your hair, or adding a loose wave, and popping in a headband with a bow detail. The bow can be as big or as small as you’d like, and really channels your inner kawaii style. Those of you with short hair can also pull this off using the tips from a video from the Scene that features a clever way to add a twist for any hair length.

2. Princess Power

It’s definitely worth noting the iconic side buns worn by Princess Leia, played by the late Carrie Fisher. These aren’t necessarily a fit for the office, depending on where you work, but they are totally cool for both the weekend and cosplaying. Plus, you can always raise these a tad for a ’90s-inspired ‘do. If you need a little help figuring it out, then you’ll definitely want to check out this easy tutorial from Buzzfeed on how to apply some of your favorite geeky hair-dos at home.

3. Schoolgirl Chic

There’s nothing quite as nerdy as a pair of pigtails. These can be worn many different ways, and don’t have to sit high on your head like they did in grade school. Elevate yours by curling your hair and wearing them low and forward, or by braiding them. This creates a simple and easy style, while also showing love to the gals in your favorite anime.

4. Casual Kat

Slightly more complicated, but totally worth learning, is the Katniss Everdeen braid. This is great for when you feel like kicking ass and taking names, or just need to get your hair out of your face. Either way, here’s a great tutorial by Makeup Geek that gives you the step-by-step on how to recreate the popular look.

5. Big Bang

Sometimes a big bang (side swept, that is) and a few strategic accessories are all you need to nail a no-fuss nerdy hairstyle. Blow out your side bangs with a large round brush, and either straighten or loosely curl the rest. Part your hair on the side, and either pop in a bow shaped barrette (bonus points if they’re the old school plastic kind), or simply don your black frames for an easy, yet effective, go-with-everything sort of ‘do.
