SGDQ: Kicking Off Summer

Summer is coming.

It doesn’t really have the same dramatic effect, does it? Oh, well.

Although, technically speaking, summer is already here. The sun is hot, the sand is warm, the scent of barbeque drifts through the air, and nature is calling for us to journey outside. It’s a beautiful time.

To play video games.

Let the Summer Gaming Season Commence!

With the start of summer comes the beginning of Summer Games Done Quick (SGDQ). This weeklong event of speedrunning video games is not just an entertaining pastime. It’s a charity fundraiser. SGDQ seeks to raise money for Doctors Without Borders, a humanitarian aid group founded in Geneva, Switzerland (because of course it was) in 1971. Doctors Without Borders brings medical professionals (doctors, nurses, logistical experts, and more) from across the globe to countries lacking healthcare. SGDQ supports this noble effort.

And who said video games are bad?

Summer Games Done Quick is a bi-annual event. It launched with the always popular Super Mario 3D World. The list of games they plan to speed through is simply staggering. Below is an incomplete list of just a sampling of the many titles on this summer menu.

Donkey Kong Country

Kirby Super Star

Pikmin

Bioshock 2

Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Mega Man 1, 3, 5, and 6

Resident Evil 2

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Castlevania 64

Outlast

Grand Theft Auto 2

Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons (and Skyward Sword)

Halo: Combat Evolved

Metroid Fusion

Super Mario Sunshine

Pokémon Red vs. Pokémon Gold

Portal and Portal 2

And, many, many, many, more.

The final game, fittingly enough, is Final Fantasy VI (haha, puns), set to premiere on Saturday night/Sunday morning. It is estimated to be a seven-hour run. For a complete list of games and times, check out their website. You can also watch their streaming from their Twitch account. Don’t forget to subscribe!

Anything Else?

In addition to the entertainment value, there are donation incentives to help further support Doctors Without Borders. There are a plethora of incentives, from having runners engage in challenges, to getting in bid wars (please keep them cleaner than flame wars) to competing for a massive list of prizes, including – wait for it – a Playstation 4!

Now that’s incentive.

Summer Games Done Quick is ongoing even as we speak! So what are you waiting for? Head on over for a grand old time! In other words, get your game on!
