The Long Dark survival game is as beautiful as it is dark. An independent game studio based on Vancouver Island, called Hinterland Games, wants to know: are you a survivor? If the world were to suddenly lose all light and technology, would you be able to survive what Mother Nature can throw at you? This isn’t a zombie horror, this isn’t an alien invasion; this is about how you would survive should all the daily comfort of life be taken away. The Long Dark is a realistic wilderness survival game that will test your morals and skills.
What Happens When Technology is Gone?
In this first person, immersive survival simulation game; a massive geomagnetic disaster has occurred and left the world in darkness. The world didn’t go out with a bang but with a whimper. You’re no longer on the top of the food chain and with winter coming; food and water are quickly running out. With thought-provoking game play and a mature plot, this game will push you to find out what you’d really do to survive.
The Beauty of a Forsaken World
The Long Dark features a stunning and beautiful original art style and highlights the wild and untamed beauty of the Northern Wilderness.
In the narrative mode, you play as bush pilot, Will Mackenzie, who crash lands deep in the Northern Canadian wilderness in the aftermath of the geomagnetic disaster. You will need to help him navigate the new “post digital” world he has been plunged into.
A player must be on the constant look out for food and water while using survival skills to avoid the many dangers brought on by the harsh weather, wildlife, and even other survivors. Above you is the mysterious and beautiful aurora that adds an unpredictable danger to an already hazardous situation.
You’ll have to explore a massive open world and find resources, while balancing a range of debilitating conditions such as; hypothermia, starvation, dehydration. You will also have to avoid more serious ailments, such as; blood loss and dysentery. The in-depth survival aspect also forces you to keep track of your body temperature, caloric intake, hunger/thirst, fatigue, and the wind-chill. Can you survive long enough to understand the profound changes the world has gone through because of the disaster?
What Kind of Survivor Are You?
The Long Dark will push you to answer the question: “How far will you go to survive?” You’ll be forced to face events that will challenge your morals. Do you believe that “only the fittest may survive” or would you risk your life, even sacrifice it, for the greater good? Any of the survivors in the game can either be friends or enemies, depending on what decisions you make.
Choose From Sandbox Survival or Narrative Episodes
Push yourself to survive as long as you can for hours of free-form game play in the Survival Sandbox (a version of the game, with all the deep survival mechanics but without narrative). Across the large open world, you’ll have to use your skills to make it through dozens of survival scenarios. You’ll face threats created by Mother Nature and by other survivors you’ll meet along the way.
The narrative mode of the game is set up in episodes that take you through dozens of locations and introduces a wide range of memorable characters. Hinterland Games says that this dark but visually stunning post-disaster story was inspired by the “creative risk-taking seen in many of today’s exciting television series.” Their tag line is; “This isn’t the end of the world, but you can see it from here.”
The Long Dark Sandbox version is set to be released on Steam Early Access in September 2014, while the full release of the Sandbox and Story Mode will come later in the year. When it is released, the game will be playable on Window, Mac, and Linux.
