Companies keep posting cybersecurity jobs that nobody fills. The global shortage of qualified security professionals has left businesses, hospitals, and government agencies exposed at the exact moment threats are multiplying.

Amberton University wants to close part of that gap. This university, based in Garland, Texas, has launched a Cybersecurity Management Certificate. The four-course program targets a specific weak spot in the talent pipeline. It trains people to lead security efforts, not just execute them.

Dr. Paul Burton, Academic Dean, said the decision came down to demand. “I think the main kicker was high demand for growth. There’s a significant global shortage of cybersecurity professionals out there,” Dr. Burton said. “So it makes it a high-demand, stable, lucrative career path.”

Students played a part in the decision too. Dr. Burton said student input played a direct role in getting the certificate built and approved.

Management, Not Just Technical Skills

Most cybersecurity training focuses on technical execution. Amberton University took a different route. The certificate blends business and leadership skills with security fundamentals.

“It’s designed to equip students and professionals in leadership positions to respond to cybersecurity issues in the business and technical settings,” Dr. Burton said.

The distinction matters. Security failures often trace back to management decisions, not technical ones. Budgets are cut.  Warnings are ignored. Risk assessments never happen. A proactive manager who understands security can prevent problems that no firewall can fix.

Dr. Burton put it plainly. “Knowledge of security principles is now necessary in nearly every tech career, including software development, network administration, and IT support,” he said.

Four Courses, One Clear Path

The certificate consists of four courses. Each builds on the last.

The first course, Information Systems and Technology Management, sets a baseline in IT knowledge. It covers AI, cloud computing, and digital platforms. The second course, Introduction to Cybersecurity, moves into technical territory. Students study core security principles, technologies, and practices.

“Learners gain a practical exposure to incident response, digital forensics, log analysis, and AI-enabled security operations,” Dr. Burton said of the introductory course.

The third course, Cybersecurity Risk Management, teaches students to identify threats before attacks happen. The fourth, Cybersecurity Leadership and Management, examines how organizations of every type manage security. That includes corporations, government agencies, and nonprofits.

Dr. Burton called the risk management course a personal favorite. Too many leaders wait until an attack hits before taking security seriously. By then, he said, they are “a day late and a dollar short.”

The course flips that pattern. “The risk management course that really gives them that proactive approach to look at these things before you get hit,” Dr. Burton said. It includes case studies of examples of when they were attacked and what happened and how it could have been alleviated or mitigated before it hit.

AI Raises the Stakes

Artificial intelligence has changed the threat landscape on both sides. Attackers use it to scale their operations. Defenders use it to detect intrusions faster. Amberton University built AI content directly into the curriculum rather than treating it as an afterthought.

Dr. Burton did not downplay the risk. “It’s scary out there with the AI capabilities,” he said. The courses address AI-enabled security operations alongside traditional defense methods, so students learn to work with the technology instead of around it.

Who Should Enroll

The certificate fits working professionals with some grounding in information technology. Deep technical expertise is not required. The introductory structure brings students up to speed. “Any manager really needs to know the basics of cybersecurity, even if you’re not a techie,” Dr. Burton said.

Project managers, IT supervisors, and team leads with technology responsibilities stand to gain the most. Dr. Burton knows that audience well. He teaches project management and spent years in enterprise IT, working at Deloitte, Raytheon, and Salesforce. That experience shaped how the certificate treats security as a core business risk, not a niche concern.

New Faculty With Industry Credentials

Amberton University hired a dedicated cybersecurity specialist to lead the program. Dr. Felix Hernandez joined the faculty this year after working at Dell as a cybersecurity lead manager.

“He’s got extensive cybersecurity experience,” Dr. Burton said. “He’ll be driving all the courses as we launch the program.”

The hire reflects a broader Amberton practice. The university staffs its courses with working professionals who bring field experience into the classroom.

Built for Working Adults

Amberton has served working adults for 55 years. The university offers four 10-week sessions each year, and students can complete coursework 100% online. Tuition sits at $325 per credit hour with no hidden fees.

The certificate follows the university’s standard four-course, 12-credit format. Those credits stack into a full degree, so students can apply the certificate toward a master’s program later. Nothing gets wasted.

That structure suits professionals who cannot pause their careers for training. A manager can earn the credential in stages, one course at a time, while working full time.

The demand side of the equation is not going anywhere. Cyberattacks keep growing in frequency and cost. Organizations need people who can manage the response, and Amberton University is betting that its new certificate will help supply them.
