Windows 11 Lets You Move the Taskbar to the Left or Right, But It’s Broken

Windows 11 users started complaining about the inability to move the taskbar late last year. It has become a hassle to move your taskbar on either side of the screen. However, the function is now possible, albeit through a registry hack. So, now you are free to move the taskbar even at the top of the screen and still use it normally.

While some users have successfully learnt ways to move the taskbar on top of the screen, others are still struggling to use the feature when they move it on the left or right side of the screen. But how does it happen that the function works on one position and not the other?

Interestingly, Windows 11 uses a similar internal Registry as Windows 10 to position the taskbar in different locations on the screen. Therefore, we can conclude that the Registry in Windows 11 is just a vestigial feature from the preceding OS. The fact that users can move and use the taskbar while atop the screen means there’s room for the manufacturer to address the issue and enable users to move the taskbar on either side of the screen.

Try The Risky Maneuver

The guide below will show you how to move your taskbar to the left or right side of your screen. Note that the taskbar may be broken, and the icons may not show up correctly.

Before we delve into the hacking experience, be warned that the Registry Editor is a serious tool that you shouldn’t tamper with. Misusing the Registry can render your Windows 11 PC inoperable. Since the taskbar relocation procedure is a simple hack, you should follow the steps keenly to avoid any problems with your system. If this is the first time you are using the Registry, it’s advisable to back it and the PC up before implementing any changes. Now, lets’ get down to work:

  1. Open the Registry Editor by pressing “Windows+R” or searching it on the taskbar.
  2. Find and navigate to the key below;

“Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects3”

  • Double-click the “Settings” option in the “StuckRects3.”

The “Edit Binary Value” will open.

  • Focus on the second row from the top and locate the fifth value from the left (In most cases, the value is set to “03”).
  • You should change this number to determine the side on which your taskbar should appear.

Each number below represents the position of the taskbar on the screen:

00: The left side

01: The top

02: The right side

03: The bottom.

To implement any of these changes, follow the steps below;

  1. Place the cursor to the right of the “03” number.
  2. Press the Backspace once.
  3. Type the number corresponding to your preferred taskbar location.
  4. Click “OK.”

  • Close the Registry.
  • Enter “Ctrl+Shift+Esc” to open the Task Manager.
  • Select “More Details.”

Restarting Windows Explorer is a better option than simply restarting your PC, which won’t implement the changes.
