Pokémon: Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is set to be released on the 19th of November, so what better time to research which Pokémon get the most love and affection on the internet, and which frustrate and annoy the players to the point of venting their frustrations online.

With Pokémon: Sword and Shield generating over 6 million sales worldwide on launch day in 20191, the buzz around the game hasn’t died down since its first release in 1996, with that launch being its most successful ever, and that excitement is expected to carry over into the new release with searches for the new titles increasing by over 5000% over the last 12 months. Fans of the franchise are also searching for other things such as “What Pokémon are you”, “Will Pokémon ever be real” and “Which Pokémon game is the best”2.

Using data from Linkfluence3 on the 25 most popular Pokémon4, and a few we just could not leave out, Ebuyer has revealed which Pokémon are generating the most conversations online, as well as those that are experiencing the most negative and positive sentiment.

The most talked-about Pokémon

Unsurprisingly, Pikachu is the most talked about, with the flagship Pokémon racking up 2.3m conversations over the last 12 months.

In 2nd place is the 1st Generation Pokémon Eevee, with the furry fox-like creature with a multitude of different evolutions generating 636k conversations online. In 3rd place comes the iconic Charizard, with the fiery 1st Generation Pokémon generating 567k conversations online in the last year.

The Pokémon we love the most

Even though Pikachu’s the most popular one out there, he doesn’t claim the #1 spot on the most loved list, with Charmander coming in at 1st. Taking the crown for the Pokémon we love the most, 31.2% of conversations are of positive sentiment, beating its starter Pokémon counterparts Squirtle and Bulbasaur.

Coming in at 2nd is the Generation II Dark evolution of Eevee, Umbreon, whose conversations of positive sentiment trump not only its more popular pre-evolution, but also beats all of the other “eeveelutions” in terms of online love. Next is Arcanine; known for its bravery and fierce loyalty, the 1st Generation evolution of Growlithe claims the 3rd spot on the most loved list.

The Pokémon we hate the most

The most hated Pokémon on the internet is the 1st Generation Dragonite, possibly due to how OP the Dragon/Flying-type Pokémon is on some of the titles, such that 11.9% of conversations are of negative sentiment.

In 2nd place comes the extremely powerful Mewtwo. Created by science with humanoid and feline features, the 1st Generation legendary Psychic-type Pokémon is the centre of a lot of hate online. In 3rd comes the massive 1st Generation Pokémon Snorlax, with the big, fat and sleepy Normal-type annoying a lot of players online (probably for not moving out the way unless you’ve got a flute).

Commenting on the research, Andy Roberts, E-Commerce Director of Ebuyer, says:

“The Pokémon franchise has expanded over several generations now since its conception, and both the game and the individual Pokémon within the universe are adored by millions of people around the world, but sometimes the most memorable Pokémon are those which are disliked.

With the upcoming release of Pokémon: Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, take a look at which Pokémon are the ones to catch, and which are the ones to avoid when you start your new adventure!”
