June movie preview- 'jurassic world: fallen kingdom'

June Movie Preview: Welcome to Jurassic June

We have had plenty of superhero movies as of late. But as we get into June movies, the closest we’ll get to Marvel or DC comics is Disney and Pixar’s latest, The Incredibles 2. We also get to return to the island (again!) on a dino rescue mission for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Here’s our full June movie preview.

June 1stAction Point, Adrift, Upgrade

Action Point stars Johnny Knoxville as an amusement park owner, who neglects safety standards in favor of “fun” at his oddball park. The film is based on the real-life New Jersey attraction, Action Park, which was also poorly designed and dangerous. In the movie, there is a scripted plot mixed in with Knoxville and Chris Pontius of Jackass fame performing actual stunts.

Adrift is about sailing, a fun summer activity. But you may want to avoid this one if you plan on actually getting in a boat. 1. A couple falls in love. (Great!) 2. They go on a sailing adventure together. (Also great!) 3. They get caught in a category five hurricane and spend the rest of the movie attempting to survive in a drifting boat. (Not so great.)

Logan Marshall-Green stars in the super-violent sci-fi film, Upgrade. After his wife is killed, he uses an experimental computer chip implant to turn himself into a super-fighter to seek out revenge. The fight scenes definitely look different from your common action movie.

June 8thHereditary, Hotel Artemis, Ocean’s 8

Tony Collette stars in the horror flick, Hereditary. After her character’s mother dies, her family begins to experience strange things that seem to be linked to the mother. When I say strange I mean terrifying and scream inducing. The movie’s promotional materials talk about the extreme scariness. Maybe that’s a selling point for you?

Hotel Artemis is a secret hospital for criminals. The film takes place in a near future setting with Jodie Foster’s character running the hotel, which maintains a very strict set of rules. In addition to Foster, Dave Bautista plays a “health care professional,” Jeff Goldblum is a guy called “The Wolf King,” and Sterling K. Brown and Brian Tyree Henry play quirky bank robbers. Not sure what else you could ask for.

We’ve been hearing about Ocean’s 8 and its all-female cast for a long time now. But can a movie with this impressive list of stars actually live up to the hype? Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, and Awkwafina make up those eight. Bullock plays Debbie Ocean, the sister of George Clooney’s Danny Ocean from the previous Ocean’s trilogy. After getting out of prison, she assembles a team to rob the Met Gala.

June 13th-15thThe Incredibles 2, Superfly, Tag

The Incredibles 2 picks up where the 2004 film left off. No one has been aged up at all. After Elastigirl gets a new job fighting crime, Mr. Incredible stays home to take care of the kids. The job quickly proves more difficult than saving the world. So it’s a family comedy with some superhero stuff mixed in. It’s already much happier than most Disney/Pixar movies.

Superfly is a remake of the 1972 film Super Fly. Note the slight difference in the title. A smooth operating criminal attempts one final deal in order to get out of the business. But things are complicated by a new crew involved with a cartel.

Maybe Tag explains why Jeremy Renner was absent from Infinity War. Probably not. This film’s struggle is a bit different from Thanos’ invasion. A group of friends keep a game of tag going for decades frequently tagging each other at important life events. Renner’s character has never been tagged. From the trailers it looks like Renner is essentially playing a similar character to Hawkeye in a game of tag. So is this a Hawkeye solo movie?

June 22ndJurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

The premise for Jurassic World was that the park was finally opened as a functional attraction. Well obviously things didn’t work out there. Fallen Kingdom has Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) and Owen (Chris Pratt) returning to that now overrun island to save some dinosaurs as a volcano threatens to kill them all. There’s also some kind of greedy corporate scam centered around exploiting the animals. So it’s like The Lost World, but with Chris Pratt instead of Jeff Goldblum. …Although Jeff Goldblum is also in this one.

June 29th Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Uncle Drew

Josh Brolin wasn’t in a new release for a few weeks, but now he’s back in Sicario: Day of the Soldado. This one is a bit more grounded than Thanos or Cable were. Emily Blunt does not return as the protagonist she played in the 2015 original, Sicario. Instead Brolin and Benicio Del Toro take center stage reprising their roles. It is discovered that drug cartels are smuggling Jihadi terrorists across the border in to the US. So those two characters go on a mission to solve the problem by inciting a war between cartels.

Boston Celtics star Kyrie Irving played a character called Uncle Drew for a number of Pepsi commercials. The character is a senior citizen/ “streetball legend” who embarrasses younger players on the court. The joke is that he’s not old at all. He’s Kyrie Irving, a pro in his 20s. Well now we’re getting a movie out of this ad campaign. The premise has Uncle Drew assembling a team for a basketball tournament. That team consists of a bunch of other real-life pros dressed in grey wigs and pretending to be older. Naturally, Shaquille O’Neal is one of them. I imagine they drink Pepsi throughout.

We have quite a variety of options among these June movies. While there are plenty of entries that don’t appeal to me at all, there are a few I can’t wait for. I’m a pretty big fan of all things Jurassic Park. So Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has to be my pick for the month. But I’m not convinced it will be that great. Prove me wrong, Chris Pratt!
