Countdown to Wizard World Austin

As someone inherently trepidatious of crowds, there are significantly few events in this world that I look forward to. Let’s face it, being in a wheelchair at a concert or sporting event just plain sucks ass.

However, Comic Cons are a completely different breed of crowd and with the Austin Wizard World convention starting Nov. 8, I’m actually excited.

The list of guests and events keeps growing, the cosplay should be phenomenal, the weekend is packed with fun and educational events, and the crowd of top-notch artists and writers scheduled to attend is enough to make even the weakest fan-boy drool in anticipation.

I mean c’mon, almost the entire cast of Smallville is slated to be there all weekend. Superman himself (Tom Welling), as well as Lana (Kristin Kreuk), Lois (Erica Durance), Lex (Michael Rosenbaum), and Lionel Luther (John Glover) are all on the list.

The one and only Dread Pirate Roberts from The Princess Bride, Cary Elwes, will be heading a panel and there’s a slew of actors from Charmed, Gotham, and various shows and movies from our childhoods.

Professional wrestlers Bubba Ray (Devon Dudley) and Victoria (Lisa Marie Varon) will also be there and I’m supposed to have an interview with Ms. Varon on Friday night.

I also have interviews set with Barry Williams, better known as Greg Brady from The Brady Bunch and HGTV’s recent A Very Brady Renovation, and I’m waiting to hear back for interviews with Drew Powell, (Butch Gilzean / Solomon Grundy in Gotham), as well as Michael Rosenbaum.

And that’s before the weekend has even started!

The PR guys over at Wizard World are absolutely fantastic. Jerry Milani has been working with me to ensure that Geek Insider gets access to as much as possible for the weekend and even ensured that my buddy David (who is a self-admitted geek too but has the job of pushing me around in my wheelchair) was taken care of with appropriate access. So get ready for some fantastic articles next week.

With events like Batman Vs. The Joker: The Psychology Of The Bat, The Clown, And The Harlequin, Too, how can I not be stoked? As I think I’ve mentioned, I’m a huge Batman and Joker fan, so this is right up my alley.

Some of the weekend’s events seem directed specifically at me with panels such as Make A Nerdy Living: Turn Your Passions Into Profit and another titled Publish Your Nerdy Writing: How To Write And Critique In A Time Of Tweets And Trolling!

Yeah, they know their audience.

Then there’s Wizard World Giveaways And Cosplay Meetups throughout the weekend, musical performances, and literally 3 days packed with fun things to do.

I live about an hour from Austin and while snagging a hotel room for the weekend wasn’t feasible, David and I will be making the trek back and forth with a smile.

I’m on the hunt for a specific statue to add to my collection, (the Nightwing/BatGirl kiss if you’re a vendor that’s going to be there) and David is looking for killer collectibles to decorate his new apartment. So this isn’t a complete working weekend by any means.

We’ll be enjoying speaking to the cosplayers, hitting the stands and looking for deals (I’m definitely interested in deals on The Boys comics and Batman trade paperbacks) as well as checking out all the super talented artists and guests.

And of course, I’ll be sharing everything here next week. So if you can’t be there, be sure to check back here for all the fun details. If you are planning on being there and you’re going to be participating in the cosplay contest, hit me up on email (matthew@geekinsider.com) so we can plan on meeting up.

If you’re a vendor, exhibitor, artist, or other guest for Wizard World Austin and you’d like to be interviewed or featured in an upcoming article, drop me an email and let’s talk.

This weekend is stacking up to be a blast, and I can’t wait to share the details with you all.
